How tolls work

Tolls are distance-based and add up quickly — Tokyo to Osaka runs around JPY 10,000 one way. You can pay at general lanes or pass through ETC lanes without stopping, often at a discount.

SA vs PA

  • Service Areas: roughly every 50 km with restaurants, fuel and shops
  • Parking Areas: roughly every 15 km, mainly toilets and vending machines
  • Many SA food courts are destinations in themselves
  • Take a break every two hours

Lanes and congestion

  • The right lane is for overtaking only — return afterwards
  • Golden Week, Obon and New Year bring nationwide jams
  • Sunday afternoons are heavy heading into major cities
  • Check live boards or the head unit for conditions
