Prepare the required documents

Japanese rental counters are strict. Missing any one document means no car, even with a paid reservation. Bring originals — photocopies and phone photos are not accepted.

  • Your valid home driving licence (original)
  • A Geneva Convention IDP, or an official Japanese translation for eligible countries such as Taiwan, Switzerland and Germany
  • Passport (the counter checks your entry date)
  • A credit card in the main driver's name

Reserve and choose the right car class

Japanese car classes differ from Europe or the US. Kei cars are nimble on narrow roads and pay lower tolls, but they struggle with four adults plus luggage. For two or more large suitcases, start at compact or mid-size.

  • Kei car: 1–2 people, small bags, cities and islands
  • Compact: 2–3 people, one large plus one small bag
  • Mid-size / wagon: 4 people with 2–3 large cases
  • 7-seat MPV: families; pair with 4WD for snow

Confirm options and insurance

Basic cover is normally bundled into the rate, but an excess still applies in an accident. Travellers often overlook the Non-Operation Charge — compensation paid when the car cannot be rented out during repair, typically tens of thousands of yen. An excess-waiver package usually removes both.

Complete pickup at the rental counter

  • Show the booking confirmation, licence, IDP or translation, and passport
  • Confirm excess, NOC, return branch and opening time on the agreement
  • Ask staff to set the navigation language and collect booked options

Inspect the vehicle before departure

Walk around the car with staff and photograph existing marks on bumpers, wheels, doors and glass. Make sure they are recorded before leaving, then test lights, wipers, camera and child-seat fitting.

Check the ETC card and reader

Insert the ETC card correctly and listen for the successful-read message after starting the car. Use ETC-only or combined lanes and slow to the posted toll-gate speed.

Refuel before returning

Most rentals are full-to-full. Check the fuel-door label: regular petrol is normally red レギュラー, premium yellow ハイオク and diesel green 軽油. Keep the final receipt.

Return on time and hand back all items

  • Remove the ETC card and check for parking tickets, cables and belongings
  • Complete the fuel and condition check with staff
  • At airports allow at least 60 extra minutes plus shuttle and check-in time
  • For one-way rental, use only the branch named in the booking; fees follow the agreement
