What is ETC?

ETC is Japan's electronic toll collection system. The onboard unit reads your inserted ETC card and charges tolls automatically as you pass through.

Renting and using an ETC card

  • Add an ETC card at the counter — usually a few hundred yen per rental
  • Insert the card and listen for the confirmation chime
  • Use the purple ETC lanes and slow to under 20 km/h
  • If the barrier stays closed, never reverse — press the intercom
  • Tolls are settled at return, when you hand the card back

ETC passes and discounts

Regional unlimited-toll passes for overseas visitors (Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kyushu and others) can beat pay-per-use on long loops, but must be arranged at pickup for consecutive days.
