Two systems
Japan recognises two paths: an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, or an official Japanese translation for specific places including Taiwan, Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Slovenia.
Validity
- IDP: valid one year from issue
- Japanese translation: valid one year from your date of entry
- Stays longer than a year require a Japanese licence
- Your home licence original must always be carried alongside
How to get one
Apply for an IDP through your licensing authority. Japanese translations are issued by your home authority or by JAF in Japan. Arrange it at least two weeks before departure.
