A realistic daily distance
Real-world speeds in Japan are lower than the map suggests — 40–50 km/h on ordinary roads, less in the mountains. Keep to 3–4 hours and under 200 km a day so you can actually stop and explore.
Choosing where to stay
- Prefer ryokan or suburban hotels with free parking
- City hotels usually charge for parking — check the nightly rate
- Two nights in one base saves a lot of packing time
- Book three months ahead in blossom, foliage and holiday seasons
Season and road conditions
- December–March: snow tires and 4WD for Hokkaido, Tohoku and the Alps
- June–July: rainy season brings rockfall and poor visibility
- August–September: typhoon season — have a backup plan in Okinawa and Kyushu
- April–May and October–November: the best driving months nationwide
