When is a rental car actually worth it in Japan?

Where a car clearly helps
Where sights are spread out, buses are infrequent and you carry luggage, driving often halves the travel time.
- Hokkaido
- Okinawa
- Fuji Five Lakes
- Hida Takayama and Shirakawa-go
- Hokuriku
- Izu
- Parts of Kyushu
Where you probably do not need one
Central Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto have expensive parking, many one-way streets and heavy peak congestion. For city-only days, trains are usually faster and cheaper.
Where it helps
- Easy access to countryside stops
- Cheaper per person for groups
- Luggage stays in the car
Where it does not
- Expensive city-centre parking
- Congestion in popular areas
- Finding a space takes time
For central Kyoto only, we would skip the car. Once Miyama or Amanohashidate are on the list, driving makes clear sense.
