Winter tyres and snow chains
From November to April, roads in Hokkaido, Tohoku and mountain areas are snow-covered. Rental cars in those regions come with winter tyres as standard, but all-wheel drive usually has to be requested when booking.

- Confirm winter tyres and, if needed, AWD when you book
- Allow about 1.5 times the summer driving time
- Check road information and the forecast before leaving
- Carry a snow scraper, gloves, heat packs and a charging cable
Chain controls and expressways
Winter tyres do not guarantee access in every condition. Under チェーン規制, only vehicles meeting the posted chain requirement may proceed. If you cannot fit chains safely, reroute or stop.

- Never fit chains in a traffic lane; use the designated area or a safe stop
- Check expressway closures, winter-tyre and chain controls before departure
Icy roads and black ice
Braking distance on snow is three to four times longer than on dry tarmac. The single rule that matters: do everything slowly.

- Accelerate, steer and brake gently — no sudden inputs
- Keep at least double your usual following distance
- Bridges, tunnel mouths and shaded sections ice up first
- Use a low gear downhill to limit braking
- If you skid, ease off the accelerator rather than braking hard
Driving on snow-covered roads
Tyre tracks do not guarantee grip. Drive slowly, leave a long gap and finish braking early. Use one smooth steering, braking or acceleration input at a time. Stop at the nearest safe place if blowing snow reduces visibility.

Snowplows and winter road operations
Snowplows move slowly because the road ahead may be uncleared. Keep well back and never overtake without a clear view. Follow staff at clearing operations and temporary closures.

Parking and clearing snow
After a night outdoors the car may be buried. Clear the roof, bonnet, lights and number plate before driving: snow sliding off the roof blocks your view and endangers the car behind.
- Lift the wipers off the glass before parking
- Clear the exhaust pipe to avoid carbon monoxide backflow
- Park nose-out for an easier morning departure
